See Exodus XXIV:10-11. The Elders saw plainly, but they were in a normal state and it was a lower vision. Moses fasted for forty days and forty nights and had a glimpse of the higher God, though even then only in relation to creation. Exodus XXXIII:17-23. What Moses saw was the face of the Logos that sees creation, or the eye that sees creation, which can be identified with Providence. He did not see the face or eye of the Logos turned towards the creator. The Lord of Hosts is lower, and the God of Israel below that (I think). For the DOUBLE meaning of the Tetragrammaton for the higher and lower God, see the repetition in Ex XXXIV:6. Note that in verse 9 it is Adonai that is written, not YHWH. This is what Paul meant by Christ going before them in the wilderness. See also Deuteronomy XXXII:8-9 for the identification of the lower YHWH with the God of Israel. I think Adonai is the lower YHWH.
Marcus was only agreeing with Moses.
